Marrakesh

Marrakesh centres on a walled medina of souks, riads and palaces, with the High Atlas and desert within reach for day trips.

Getting around

The medina is walkable but its lanes are a maze. Petits taxis are cheap — agree the fare or insist on the meter. Buses and private drivers cover trips to the Atlas Mountains.

Local customs

Dress modestly, covering shoulders and knees. Non-Muslims cannot enter most working mosques. Ask before photographing people, and expect to pay performers in Jemaa el-Fnaa.

Travel tips

The dirham is a closed currency — exchange on arrival and spend before leaving. Bargaining is expected in the souks. Carry small notes and cash generally.
