Getting around

Trams, metro, funiculars and ferries all run on the Istanbulkart, which is worth buying immediately. Ferries between the European and Asian sides are cheap and scenic.

Local customs

Dress modestly at mosques — women should cover their heads, and everyone removes shoes. Avoid visiting during prayer times. Bargaining is expected in the bazaars, not in shops.

Travel tips

Carry small notes for ferries and street food. Official taxis are metered; ride-hailing apps reduce disputes. Sultanahmet's main sights are walkable from each other.
